Introduction: Happy Christmas

Pluralism – This is one word that characterizes INDIA! Her diverse peoples, religions, cultures, backgrounds, languages….. Perhaps, no other country in this world is as diverse! But sadly, this pluralism has been terribly assaulted these past few months in so many different parts of the country, very speccially in Gujarat… At the receiving end are the poor and the marginalized, the tribals, the dalits and other minorities. Embossed on this letter – paper is replica of a window from the Sidi Syed mosque which stands in the heart of Ahmedabad city. One can clearly see that the intricate carving depicts a „tree of life”; and on the mosthead above, is a traditional dance of Gujarat. Both these are símbolic of a rich heritage. This Christmas, join us in praying, that this heritage is always preserved.

Education – Our efforts continue in this sphere relentlessy…. Today, with over 32,000 children in our Chattralayas and Batwadis, we see for our children: a HOPE FOR A BETTER TOMORROW. It is your prayers, your sacrifice and generosity that have greatly helped to make this possible. This Christmas, we request your renewed and continued support.

Awareness – Closely related to education are our efforts, to make people aware of their fundamental rights. Several children are denied the joys of childhood; there are scores of others who are unaware that ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE. Above all, draconian laws stifle the growth and development of many. Christmas is about making mankind realize that all is not lost. This Christmas, be in solidarity with us, to make it a realitiy….

Compassion – Gujarat yearns for this! For many here, their world has not only been brutalized but they continue to remain on the fringes of society. Mother Teresa epitomized this compassion in our land. This Christmas, let us allow the compassion of Jesus, to overwhelm us into concrete action.

Empowerment – True peace and justice brings empowerment: a society which reaches out to all around and discriminates none. Christmas is about God pitching his tent among us…and empowering us. This Christmas, let us truely empower one another….

This past year has been a difficult one for us. We thank you for accompanying us. We wish you and your near and dear ones, the joys and blessings of this Christmas Season: of PEACE, today and every day of the New Year 2004!
